Geriatric Anesthesia

Geriatric Anesthesia

Geriatric anesthesia is a branch of medicine that focuseson the use of anesthesia in the elderly. For a variety of reasons, theperioperative treatment of older patients differs from that of youngerpatients. Some of them can be linked to changes that occur as part of the agingprocess, but many are also caused by diseases that come with age. Thedistinction between so-called normal aging and pathological alterations iscrucial in providing care for the aged. As the population lives longer, Anesthesia and Surgeryhave become more common. The perioperative care of geriatric patientsnecessitates knowledge of aging physiology and its relationship to surgery andanesthesia. Only skilled anesthetists can adequately evaluate patients andarrange for their postoperative care to avoid difficulties.
