Risksand Complications of Anesthesia

Anesthesia-related risks and complications arecharacterized as morbidity(a disease or illness caused by anesthesia) or mortality(death caused by anesthesia) (death that results from anesthesia). It'sdifficult to quantify how anesthetic affects morbidity and mortality because aperson's condition before surgery and the complexity of the surgical processcan both influence the risks. The physiologic stress of surgery resulted innumerous problems and deaths due to shock. The lesser the rate of problems, thefaster the procedure was (leading to reports of very quick amputations). Anesthesiaallows for more intricate and life-saving surgery to be performed, reducing thephysiologic stress of the procedure while also adding a level of danger. Thefirst mortality directly attributable to the use of anesthesia was documentedtwo years after the introduction of ether anesthetics.
